August 10th Worship Service Planning

Let's use this post to comment on what we would like to try in this week's service. There are lots of posts started, so let's continue to comment on those as desired and use this post to volunteer for parts of the service. Maybe you volunteer to read, maybe you specify what you volunteer to read. Then others can comment. Maybe you volunteer to play music. Then we can blog back and forth about who is helping where, who needs what help, etc. I'll get us started...

I'll begin by saying that from reading the posts about 9/11, I propose we at least have a reading about it, perhaps Mike's example from other 9/11 situations, or excerpts from my example of the explanation of poverty's role in 9/11/01. Any thoughts on how it could tie into the scriptures Mike posted?

i agree, and volunteer to do anything in the arts/music category. a lot of it depends on the direction we head this week in terms of a theme. so...what's the theme? fringe, obviously, but how is that going to work with the verses?

hmm, will do more reading and respond with an answer.

whoops. i agreed with the original post. this should probably go with mike's original 9-11 post, but i say let's worry about it when we get there!

right, we have the fringe theme. we could do the focused painting to illustrate people crammed in the fringes as I proposed last week. Other than that, the fringe tie in could be simply meeting in the earth house space surrounded by provocative art. I don't think the theme has to be fringe. The theme could be something else as long as we give a shoutout to the frindge here and there. I am not sure how I feel about 9/11 being the theme though. Maybe poverty could be the theme. We touched on it last week, it is pretty central to a lot of the bible, it is prominent on our sign, it is a poignant issue here at Lockerbie Central, a flashpoint with some in the neighborhood, it ties to the fringe and to both my post and Mike's post about 9/11.

How does this work for a call to worship?

Call to Worship:

L: As we come together today, we are made afraid.

P: O Calmer of troubled waters, let us hear again your reassuring words, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear."

L: As we come together today, we are driven by winds of ambition and pride.

P: O Healer of troubled souls, let us hear again your reassuring words, "Take heart! it is I; have no fear."

A: Come, Lord Jesus, and bless our worship with the gift of your presence, that we might find peace for our anxious hearts and meaning for our troubled lives.

L: O people of God, why do you lament the little faith of your neighbors? overlooking those giving food to the hungry?

P: Forgive us, O Lord, for sitting in judgment.

L: O people of God, why do you lament the little faith of your neighbors? Are you not overlooking those turning unused buildings into shelters for the homeless?

P: Forgive us, O Lord, for sitting in judgment.

L: O people of God, why do you lament the little faith of your neighbors? Are you not overlooking those joining hands to fight oppression?

P: Forgive us, O Lord, for sitting in judgment.

A: Judgment belongs to the Lord. Forbid that we should seek to play the role of judge, O God, that we might perform the role of servant.

For special music what about bridge over troubled water? simon and garfunkel...it sorta fits.

When youre weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;
Im on your side. when times get rough
And friends just cant be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
When youre down and out,
When youre on the street,
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you.
Ill take your part.
When darkness comes
And pains is all around,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

Sail on silvergirl,
Sail on by.
Your time has come to shine.
All your dreams are on their way.
See how they shine.
If you need a friend
Im sailing right behind.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind.

Hi, everyone!

Thanks for a great meeting last night! I'm excited to be part of your team this Sunday. I've been working a bit on things this p.m.

Hilary, I have the "Put Your Hand in the Hand" music at North UMC (38th & Meridian) in my mailbox with your name on it. If you ask at the front desk any time between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., they can get it for you. Thanks!

I really like the Call to Worship that you all posted.

I'm not sure about "Bridge Over Troubled Water." I'm talking about Jesus calling us out into the troubled waters, not necessarily protecting us from them. Any song that focuses on being called into uncertainty would be great. Let me brainstorm a bit more ...

As for hymn-type songs, I'd recommend the following:
* The Voice of God is Calling (UMH 436)
* Jesus Calls Us O'er the Tumult (UMH 398)
* Here I Am, Lord (UMH 593)
* You Are Mine (FWS 2218)

"You Are Mine" has a pretty contemporary flair to it, but the rest are traditional hymns.

Totally open to your thoughts & suggestions, however!

good point, Lisa on Bridge over troubled water.... i realized when i posted the song it wasn't quite right with what you were saying yesterday. i guess i just let the water metaphors get to my head!

we'll keep trying

Definitely like Hear I am Lord. easy to sing, straight to the point.

I placed the song - "Put Your Hand in the Hand" - on Jordan's desk Wednesday night. Hope someone got it or Lisa's copy. Am I doing the song? - or is it a group song? I'm be glad to do whatever is needed. Joe

OOPS! - I hate to find my errors after posting. I'll be glad - not "I'm be glad..."
