first off, i love that we're going to use that video clip. it's hilarious!

secondly, have we thought about readers? it would be really easy to ask someone during the week to read scripture. Perhaps Barb? or even Luke? Maybe Pancho would be willing to read as well. Let's get new faces involved if we can. What about Mike or Ali (parents of baby Shiloh)? Just a thought. That would be one less thing we'd scramble for on Sunday morning.

third...music? i think it would be cool to sing some field songs, but i don't know any off the top of my head. we could sing "as i went down to the river" again, because that sounds so neat when we sing it acapella and everyone joins in. could we tie it into this theme of living as free people? also, what about some kind of contemplative listening piece? a modern song that maybe we don't have the capacity to perform, but still captures the point. didn't chad bring in alanis morissette (sp) once? that kind of thing.
here are some suggestions from our hymnal:
Go Down, Moses #448 - definitely not all the verses!
My Soul Gives Glory to my God #198 - i don't know the melody, but the words seem appropriate.

i know this is all vague, but i hope it helps give some form and direction to our service! Peace!

another thought i had for this worship service was from the parable.... jesus talks about god sending his representatives to meet with the tenants and the tenants killing god's representatives...

it might be cool to turn this into a little drama..who are some of god's representatives (prophetic voices) who were killed by "tenants" (religious establishment/human civiliation.)

john the baptist...some of the hebrew prophets...
what about 2oth and 21st century voices?

just a thought.

One of the things I've done in the past is readers theater. It requires very little prep. The reader reads the story and on the spot volunteers/draftees from the congregation act it out.

This week we have the blessing of two great themes: The law, and the history of God's sending messengers and the people's rejection of them.

Because we can't do both well, I suggest we let the messenger story stand on its own. Maybe with a guitar based folk song to anchor it. Maybe we could follow the Gospel reading with prayers of confession of the many times God has spoken to us and we have not responded, beginning with the biblical prophets and continuing into our own lives. (Kinda what Mike is saying.) I'd like to see us move our prayers off of our own personal agendas and on to God's agenda (which does include our daily concerns but don't begin with us).

The sermon I've prepared centers on the law as the rule set for a liberated people. Songs like Steal Away or Swing Low would help.

I'll also have a flip chart exercise to make the sermon more participatory.

I'm arguing with the blog over my password, so I'm posting this anonymously.
